ULMA combines innovation and tradition in the new building for the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (IEB)

ULMA Architectural Solutions has played a key role in the construction of the new building for the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (IEB) in Madrid. The building, inspired by classical universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, stands out for combining traditional design with innovative materials.

In order to achieve the original idea of the promoter to inspire the building to classical British universities. Firstly, the ULMA pieces were made to look similar to natural stone. Secondly, all the necessary solutions and pieces were made to cover the 8 facades of the building (4 exterior + 4 interior). It is surprising that with only 11 types of pieces, it has been possible to create this infinity of solutions and frame the 380 windows, their arches, cornices and pinnacles.

Stoneo, savings and versatility

The use of Stoneo was the key to this. Instead of heavy natural stone, which would have increased both the cost and the difficulty of installation in certain parts, Stoneo Forms prefabricated elements were used. This has saved more than one million euros. As the material is four times lighter than stone, it is faster and safer to install. The weight of some pieces has been reduced from 70kg, which they weighed in natural stone, to 20kg.

In addition, Stoneo’s prefabricated elements were able to faithfully replicate the tone and texture of the ‘campaspero’ limestone, known for its white and grey tones. To achieve this, intensive colour mixing tests and specially treated moulds were carried out to replicate the characteristic roughness of this stone.

Stoneo is a material that, in addition to solving two major problems of today’s architecture such as durability and sustainability, is very versatile. As we have already noted, it is lighter than stone and flexible enough to adapt to complex shapes and customise made-to-measure solutions, allowing clean and precise cuts.

Technical advice

ULMA’s Architectural Office not only provided customised solutions, but also offered technical advice throughout the installation process, ensuring an outstanding end result. Constant communication between the different parties involved was key to minimising problems and guaranteeing the success of the project.
